WAFER THIN CUT: THE GREEN KITCHEN CERAMIC KNIVES SET & UNIVERSAL KNIFE BLOCK COMBO

WAFER THIN CUT: THE GREEN KITCHEN CERAMIC KNIVES SET & UNIVERSAL KNIFE BLOCK COMBO

My favorite quick pick me up juice is a drink of wafer-thin slices of fresh ginger steeped in freshly squeezed grapefruit juice.  The only problem: finding a knife that can cut the ginger wafer thin. Got a favorite recipe that requires the thinnest slices you can achieve? Try the Green Kitchen Ceramic Knives Set and Universal Knife Block Combo.

ADVANTAGES OF CERAMIC KNIVES

The Green Kitchen Ceramic Knives Set and Universal Knife Block Combo is a set of Ceramic Knives that comes with a Knife Block for easy access and also comes with a fantastic fruit peeler. Not to oversell these knives, but they have ushered a new era of cooking implements into our house. Let me explain:

Our family has been in the food business for generations. We have had sets of Wusthof Knives and Henckels Knives for generations, and they just didn’t quit. I remember my grandmother taking great care to perfectly sharpen them, especially before she cut into a huge roast or smoked turkey. The meat never “shred,” it just cut perfectly. But these high-end knives required a lot of upkeep, and over time have lost their luster and precision.

That is why Ceramic Knives are a better bet. I had heard of ceramic knives before trying this set, but I never knew the many benefits of investing in a quality ceramic knife set.

First, Ceramic Knives are much harder than even stainless steel knives. On the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness, the kind of steel used in knives is 4.5, whereas the hardness of the Zirconia Ceramic used in these knives is 8.5 (for comparison, diamonds score a 10, and they are the hardest substance. So, your Green Kitchen Ceramic Knives Set is going to stay hard over time, which means that they will rarely if ever need sharpening.

Also, they are incredibly resistant to acid in food, so they won’t corrode over time. This makes them ideal for precisely cutting meat (as I did tonight with great success) as well as fruits and vegetables.

PUTTING THE KNIVES TO THE TEST MY IMPRESSIONS

I was pretty impressed when I was able to slice straight through a large thick-rind lemon in one slice. Washing the knives is easy and goes quickly. So far, there are no stains on the knives; they look as new as the day I open the package. The handles are ergonomic and work with either hand. One of the things I really like about these knives as well is that they are lightweight so it makes fast chopping so much easier!

THE DISADVANTAGE OF CERAMIC KNIVES

The one caution in taking care of ceramic knives is that they need to be stored well. In this area, The Green Kitchen has you covered. The kit comes with a vertical knife block, which looks like a vase with grass in it. The knives store compactly and are protected by the rubber grass blades, and the whole unit is compact enough to make for easy access in the kitchen.

The set comes with a 6-inch Chef’s Knife, 5-inch Santoku Knife, a 5-Inch Utility Knife, a 3-inch Paring Knife, the “Green Grass” Knife Block and a ceramic vegetable peeler. It truly is a comprehensive kit!

I tried my hand at making Strawberry Roses, and I was astounded at the precision of these knives. I was able to cut “petals” out of the strawberry that were so thin that they were translucent, just like an actual rose. These were ripe, juicy berries as well, not firm ones that are easy to cut. If you enjoy adding decorative flourishes to your food, then this knife set is a must!

I’ve also been trying to make healthier versions of my favorite Chinese restaurant dishes. I have always found bamboo notoriously hard to chop, but these knives cut evenly and precisely through even tough stalks.
