About Mama Cozzi’s Four Cheese Calzone

Mama Cozzi’s Pizza Kitchen Calzone is a 7-ounce prepared meal designed as a single-serving entree rather than a large pizza-parlor-style calzone.

It heats in under 20 minutes and makes an especially easy lunch or fast dinner option.

Some things we immediately noticed:

  • generous filling
  • not greasy or oily
  • no giant empty air pocket
  • crisps nicely with the right cooking method

The crust is softer and doughier than traditional pizza shop calzones, but it still develops a lightly crisp texture when baked properly.

Where to Find the Calzones at Aldi

These are usually located:

  • near the prepared deli foods
  • in refrigerated display cases
  • packaged in clear plastic clamshell containers

They typically come in several varieties, including:

  • four cheese
  • pepperoni
  • other rotating flavors

This is usually a permanent Aldi item rather than a limited-time seasonal release, although some stores sell out quickly.

What We Liked

  • Generous cheese filling
  • Not greasy or oily
  • Quick and easy to prepare
  • Kid-friendly flavor
  • Crispy crust when cooked carefully
  • Good value for the portion size

What We Didn’t Like

  • Short shelf life
  • Crust becomes hard if overcooked
  • Does not freeze especially well after purchase
  • Cheese version does not include sauce

We also found that freezing it after purchase made the crust noticeably drier and harder after reheating.

Best Way to Cook Mama Cozzi Calzones

Most complaints online seem related to texture problems caused by overcooking.

When prepared carefully, the filling stays gooey and the crust becomes lightly crisp instead of hard.

Our Preferred Cooking Method

For the Best Texture:

  • loosely wrap the calzone in foil
  • place it on an open oven rack
  • remove foil for the last 1–2 minutes

This keeps the crust lightly crisp while preventing the top from becoming too hard or burnt.

The foil also helps keep the cheese soft and gooey without leaking excessively when sliced.

Alternative Cooking Methods

Parchment Paper Method

Using a loose parchment wrap creates a slightly crispier crust while still preventing excessive drying.

Microwave

Possible, but the crust becomes soft and doughy.

Air Fryer

Delicious when done carefully, although it can over-crisp quickly if overcooked.

Texture Results

Inside

Soft, gooey, cheesy filling with generous portioning.

Outside

Lightly crisp crust when foil-wrapped correctly. Harder and drier if baked uncovered too long.

What to Serve With It

This pairs especially well with:

  • marinara sauce
  • Caesar salad
  • garlic dipping sauce
  • roasted vegetables

Since the cheese version does not include sauce, adding your own dipping sauce improves it significantly.

Final Thoughts

This ended up much better than expected once we adjusted the cooking method slightly from the package instructions.

The foil-and-parchment techniques make a huge difference in texture and help create a softer, gooier calzone with a lightly crisp crust instead of a dry or hardened shell.

  • The price is pretty reasonable for what you get.
  • The crust is not a pizza parlor type crust, but it is not a sweet “pastry” type either. The crust is doughier but not too thick, and it does crisp up nicely depending how it is prepared.

WHERE TO LOCATE THE CALZONES AT ALDI’S

  • You will find the calzones in the back near the prepared foods deli area.
  • They are put out in batches, in a box with usually two rows of calzones in that box.

Should you Try Mama Cozi Calzone?

Some observations:

PROS

  • Generous, fresh-tasting cheese filing. Not runny, greasy or oily.
  • Super easy to make for a fast lunch or dinner.
  • Kid friendly. The herbs on top aren’t too flavorful and are not spicy.

CONS

  • This is a close-dated item, it usually has to be used within a week.
  • My experience they do not freeze well, the crust is harder and drier after defrosting.
  • It does NOT come with a sauce. I personally prefer my own sauce, but it does limit the use to home meals verses making for a quick lunch at the office, at least in the cheese variety. There are several other Mama Cozi calzone flavors though that perhaps you feel may not require sauce.

How to Best Cook Your Aldi’s Mama Cozi Calzone

Most of the complaints we see online relate to cooking prep problems like a burnt crust or hard filling. This is very easy to do. But when done correctly, the cheese is nice and melty, a generous amount. The crust is not the style of a pizza parlor, but it is not completely doughy either.

Here is how we prep our Mama Cozi calzone to cook it to perfection:

  • Very loosely wrap the calzone in foil to heat it evenly and to not burn the top. This keeps the crust just lightly crispy, not hard. It also make the cheese nice and gooey without leaking out when it is cut open.
  • Place the calzone on an open rack.
  • Remove the foil for the last minute or two for a crispier crust.
  • Not a fan of foil? You can get the same effect with a slightly crispier crust by using a loose parchment paper wrap.
  • It CAN be cooked in the microwave, but it is very soft and doughy.
  • Air-frying, done with care, is delicious!
